I’ve been a Class 1 HGV Driver for three years, after spending two years as a Class 2 HGV driver. I originally joined Hanson in 2019 as an Escort Driver, and it’s been a great journey ever since. What I enjoy most about the job is the variety, the different sites we visit, and the challenging locations keep things interesting. No two days ever feel the same. Outside of work, I love spending as much time as possible with my partner and getting away on holidays whenever we can.

I started at Hanson in 2021 through a friend/neighbour who also works at Hanson. I started as an Escort vehicle driver not having done this type of work before and I was taught by some of the experienced drivers at Hanson and learnt the role very quickly and I loved driving all over the country seeing some beautiful scenery and holiday parks all while escorting holiday homes/abnormal loads. Becoming an HGV Driver had been a childhood dream of mine for as long as I can remember, so in 2024 I took the leap and earned my C+E Class 1 licence. Stepping up from escorting the loads to being the one behind the wheel was a milestone I’ll never forget, it was challenging, exciting, and deeply rewarding. Now, as an HGV Driver at Hanson, I get to live that dream every single day.

No matter how far I’ve driven in a week, nothing beats rolling home on a Friday to spend time with my beautiful fiancée and 2 ragdoll boy cats Smokey and Bandit. Weekends are for recharging, relaxing, and catching up with friends who share my love for modified cars which is a passion that started in childhood, growing up with an older brother who was always elbow‑deep in engines. From escorting to now HGV driving, from dream to reality, every step has shaped who I am today, and I couldn’t be prouder of the journey.

Why my nickname is“Rug” (or Ruggaboo) My nickname “Rug” (which later evolved into Ruggaboo thanks to the drivers at work), goes all the way back to when I was younger. One day, a neighbour took one look at my long, shaggy hair and said, “Your hair’s like a rug! I’m calling you Rug Head from now on!” It stuck and it’s followed me ever since.

I’ve worked in the abnormal loads industry for 18 years, starting out as a second man before progressing through roles as an Escort Driver, Class 2 HGV Driver, Class 1 Driver, and eventually Class 1 STGO Cat 1 HGV Driver.

I’ve been with Hanson for over eight years and genuinely enjoy the job. The challenge of transporting wide-load holiday homes through narrow lanes across the country keeps the work interesting, and I appreciate that we’re trusted to get on with the job without being micro-managed. We have a strong management team behind us, and I enjoy the travel that comes with the role.

Outside of work, I love travelling, exploring new places, and spending time with friends and family. My wife and I also enjoy taking trips in our camper van whenever we can.

This will be my 14th year at Hanson as I started as a second man in 2012 and progressed into being an Escort Driver when the HGV driver I was with needed me to escort him when we were doing work in Spain and Portugal. From then on, I became an Escort Driver full time.

I love some of the scenery that we see and the travel to some stunning places, I like that no two days are ever the same with the challenges we deal with, in my spare time I love spending time with my family, going out walking and trying my hand at photography. I also enjoy playing the guitar. watching various sports including football (Leeds Utd supporter) and F1, and pretty much anything with an engine. Lover of all things that go fast ( cars / motorbikes etc. )

Since starting my journey as a Transport Supervisor in 2022, I’ve built my career around a genuine passion for the transport industry. Holding both a Transport Manager CPC and a Class 1 licence, I combine hands-on experience with strong operational knowledge to keep things running smoothly and efficiently. I particularly enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the role, finding practical solutions, improving processes, and supporting drivers and the team's day to day. Being around trucks has always been a passion of mine, and I take pride in turning that passion into reliable, professional results.

I joined Hanson in August 2021 after spending years in general haulage, ready for a new challenge and drawn to the world of wide loads. It was my brother Phil (better known as Turbo) who first encouraged me to get into driving, telling me it was a rewarding career with plenty of variety. He wasn’t wrong. Phil also works at Hanson. What I enjoy most is the camaraderie. Working in a small, tight‑knit team where everyone pulls together to get the job done and keep customers happy is something I genuinely value. Every day brings something different, and that’s what keeps me motivated.

Outside of work, weekends are all about my kids and making memories, getting outdoors, and just enjoying our time together. I love cooking, trying new recipes, and heading off on holidays whenever I get the chance. From haulage to wide loads, it’s been a journey full of challenges, teamwork, and plenty of laughs, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
